By Dr. Lynn Staheli, MD. A description of the role of the shelf acetabuloplasty in treatment of late onset Perthes disease in children over 8 years of age. The procedure should be done before deformity develops. Cast immobilization may not be necessary, or could simply be a single hip walking type of cast. The procedure is simple, effective, and safe, and also -- if it becomes necessary -- facilitates a later arthroplasty in adult life.
