Peters exited the Week 11 game against Tampa Bay because of a knee injury that wasn't related to anything he did on the field per Coach Mike Smith. In fact it was likely a residual aggravation stemming from the initial knee injuryoccurring in a Week 9 matchup against the Carolina Panthers. He underwent an MRI and surgery was ruled out based on the results.
It was the Week 16 game against the 49ers at San Francisco that ended the 2013 season for Peters. He was helped off the field in the first quarter with an Achilles injury. He later underwent surgery to repair his torn Achilles tendon.
The DT is pushing his rehab right up to the start of the season. Although recovery from Achilles injuries is much shorter now than it used to be, the Falcons are hesitant to say he'll be ready for Week 1.
Peters, a 2010 third-round pick out of Kentucky, had his best season yet in 2013. Starting in 15 games he collected 46 tackles (29 solo) and a career-high five sacks.
Having secured one of their most consistent defensive players for another year, Atlanta is hoping to capitalize in free agency to solidify their offensive and defensive depth at the lineman position.
All things being equal, Peters hopes to have an even better 2014. If his rehabilitation stays on track his return to the field this season is more than good news for the Falcons.
